Amongst the many hazards in America, flooding might be stated as one of the most frequent hazards to come visiting. Other than the vast devestation the ocean can bring in the event of a massive high tide due to hurricanes or very high winds the different flood effects can also be small local events which may only impact on an immediate neighborhood or community area.
Nonetheless, disasters, especially floods are not all the same. If you are unfortunate and experience a flood then probably a slow developing flood would be one you could cope with easier giving you and your family time to prepare and evacuate over a period of several days. Many floods give little warning especially flash floods which by their name can develop very quickly, often only in just a few minutes and there may be no visible signs of rain about. Not only is the mass of water that a flash flood brings but often in amongst the torrents of water are dangerouse objects including trees, rocks, mud, and other debris which is capable of sweeping away most things in its path.
Living in flat lands with rivers or streams dotted about leave you unprotected from banks being breached causing overland flooding, such as when a levee is breached, but this still can be destructive. Less common but just as concerning when flooding occurs when a dam breaks thus producing similar effects as those created by flash floods.
Just being aware of your surroundings and the different flood hazards in your area where you live, especially if you live in low-lying areas especilly if you are near water or downstream from any dams in your area. Some very small streams, gullies, creeks, culverts, dry streambeds, or low-lying ground that may seem harmless in the dry weather can still be potentially dangerouse when and if they flood. No matter where you live every state is at some risk from floods or flooding and the hazords they present.
