1 Up On Hormones
Hormones are chemical substances that our bodies use to regulate every physiological process. They are secreted by one cell or organ and used by another. They circulate in our blood from the secretory organ to the target organ. They are regulated by complex feedback loops that keep them balanced within specific ranges. They are necessary for growth, reproduction, maintenance of homeostasis, metabolism and all other life functions.
Balancing Act
The overall goal of your body’s function is to achieve and maintain homeostasis. In doing this, your body releases certain stress hormones that will accomplish this equilibrium. When you are upset, sad or distressed, your brain will recognize this behavior, thus releasing stress hormones from the autonomic nervous system, the part of your body that controls automatic behavior such as breathing and talking. Two hormones will be released from this part of the brain, cortical and adrenalin. Cortical is a slower working hormone, in that it works to help us remember things, and to replenish energy. This is the hormone that our produces to help stave off bacteria or viral infection. That is why cortisone is used to reduce inflammation, as it is circulated in part of the infection. In contrast, adrenalin and the autonomic nervous system work together to raise our heart rate and provide rapid responses to situation. This can be used to account for what happens in the “fight” or “flight” stress response.
How Does Growth Hormone Help?
Growth hormone is an anabolic hormone; that is, it causes tissue to be built. Anabolic processes consume energy and result in growth, tissue repair and reproduction.
Some people believe that the break down that occurs with aging may be at least partially due to the decline in human growth hormone as we age. If that is true, human growth hormone supplementation may be useful in reversing or preventing aging and in treating age-related health problems.
Although the research is in the preliminary stages, one study has shown that elderly men who received HGH injections had increased muscle mass and decreased fatty deposits. This promising study suggests that HGH may be an effective anti-aging treatment.
Types Of Hormones
Our complex human body’s natural hormones are designed to regulate our organic system’s requirements. Each person is different and their hormone level will vary according to what their needs are. For example the ovaries in women secrete two types of chemicals estradoil and estrone. These natural hormones work together giving women their periods and helping regulate their systems for child birth.
These female hormones naturally decrease as women get older or go through ‘the change or life’ or menopause. During menopause a woman may experience uncomfortable symptoms such as mood swings and hot flashes due to her body’s lack of their natural female hormones. At that time women may decide to take natural hormone supplements or synthetic hormones. There are side affects of adding extra hormones to the body so it is important that anyone wishing to supplement their body’s natural hormones talk with a health specialist first.
